You’re probably wondering, “What the heck is the meaning behind the name, The Halcyon Hive?”. Well, let me tell you. Let’s go back a few years to when I first decided to become an entrepreneur…
[imagine harps playing and the scene fades into a flashback]
I just had my son and was going back to work after my maternity leave. This was my second kid and I was struggling with the reality of going back to work and missing out on some of his developments. Being in retail management meant I had to work nights, weekends, and nearly all the holidays.
I knew I didn’t want to miss out on more bedtimes and holidays but I just wasn’t brave enough to leave the career I had been in for nearly a decade.
As the months went on I began to struggle with anxiety and depression. It may have been post-partum, I’m not sure, but I do know I was incredibly unhappy and it was starting to wear on my family. It was time for a change. My sister, who is an incredibly talented, successful entrepreneur herself, encouraged me to start something of my own. She inspired me and cheered me on right from the start. Once I felt the support from my husband and my family, I knew I was ready to take the leap.
I initially had planned to start out as a lifestyle or mom blogger (ha, you see how well that turned out!). Being a mom was my soul’s purpose. I could talk about babies, pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding all day long. But, I also felt empowered to share my journey of leaving my full-time career to create something new that allowed me the ability to be the mom I wanted to be.
Since I decided what I wanted to do, now the next big step was choosing a business name. I could use my name? Nah. My last name, Waege, (pronounced way-gee) wasn’t a great fit since no one could ever pronounce it correctly. Still, I wanted to come up with something catchy and meaningful.
It was summertime and my sister, Angela, was visiting as we brainstormed different options. It’s like naming your child, it has to be perfect and timeless, but none of the names “spoke” to me. Just then the word “halcyon” popped into my mind. It had the perfect ring to it and reminded me of a coffee house I was fond of in Austin, TX. Even better, when I researched the meaning (happiness, success, prosperity) I knew this was it.
Next was finding a word that paired well with it. At first, I wanted it to be a street name as a nod to my sis (Saffron Avenue), but I didn’t want to use Avenue too and I wasn’t loving the sound of “street”, “boulevard”, “parkway”, or any other versions. So that was out. Days later, as I was lying in bed, the word “hive” came to mind. I am not sure why that word came to me but I looked it up. Bee symbolism is actually quite fascinating!
Bees are social and productive creatures, which were virtues that I wanted to uphold as a business owner.
Plus, if I take it even deeper (and get a little woo woo), beehives are made up of hexagons which have six sides. Six is symbolic of love, communication, balance, and is the sacred number for the goddess Venus. So why does that matter? Well, I am a Libra, the sign of balance, harmony, and love. So there you have it – the stars aligned and I got my name! Now you know the meaning behind The Halcyon Hive.
